Jen & Sam's intimate woodland wedding at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall

There are some couples who just fit together. You can see it in the way they look at one another, the ease with which they move through the day, and the comfort and confidence that comes from having shared so much life already. That's exactly how Jen and Sam looked on their wedding day.

A Suffolk micro-wedding that felt natural and comfortable

After 14 years together, having first met as high school sweethearts, their wedding was about celebrating everything they'd already built together, surrounded by the people who mean the most to them.

With just 14 guests, their wedding at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall was intimate and true to who they are. They wanted everyone - themselves included - to feel natural and comfortable.

The night before had brought dramatic thunderstorms, and I remember wondering what the weather might have in store. But by the time everyone arrived on that beautiful August morning, the skies had cleared completely. Warm sunshine filtered through the trees, creating the most beautiful setting for their outdoor ceremony in Milsoms' woodland clearing. It honestly couldn't have been more perfect.

One of the things I loved most was that Jen and Sam did everything in their own way.

Rather than one of them waiting at the end of the aisle, they chose to walk into married life together, hand in hand, as Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine played softly in the background. It felt symbolic of the relationship they'd built over the past 14 years.

Their celebrant, Susan McGregor, beautifully told the story of their relationship, from meeting as teenagers to sharing so many milestones together already, while reminding everyone that this wedding was another chapter in a much longer story still waiting to unfold. Readings from siblings, featuring meaningful poems and song lyrics, made the ceremony feel personal and included everyone in their journey.

The no-phones wedding ceremony

Something else I absolutely loved was their unplugged ceremony. Jen and Sam asked their guests to put away their phones, allowing everyone to be fully present in the moment.

As a photographer, I can't recommend this enough. Instead of looking through screens, guests were completely immersed in the ceremony, reacting naturally, laughing, crying and smiling without distraction.

It also means there aren't phones appearing in the background of your photographs or blocking important moments. The result is a gallery that feels timeless, while your loved ones get to experience your wedding exactly as it unfolds.

After the ceremony, everyone gathered on the lawn for cocktails and canapés, with an upbeat disco-house soundtrack bringing a fun, celebratory atmosphere to the afternoon.

While guests enjoyed catching up, I stole Jen and Sam away for a little wander through the trees. Away from the excitement, they could simply breathe, chat and enjoy being newly married together. There was no pressure to pose or perform. We explored, laughed together and captured moments that would be theirs forever.

Jen looked absolutely beautiful in her floaty, flowing gown, while Sam's beige suit complemented the relaxed, summery feel of the day perfectly.

Photographing Jen as a bride was especially lovely for me because we'd worked together several times before. She'd modelled for me and for other local businesses over the years, so it felt special seeing her in such a different chapter of her life. This wasn't a styled shoot or a campaign; these were core memories, and it was wonderful to be trusted with documenting them.

35mm film photography for weddings

Alongside my digital camera, I also photographed parts of the day on 35mm film.

Film has a unique quality: the colours feel softer, the grain adds character, and every frame carries a beautiful sense of nostalgia. It has an authentic, old-world feel that suits intimate weddings so perfectly, creating images that feel story-like, romantic and candid.

As the afternoon continued, everyone made their way into The Mess, Milsoms' beautifully intimate private dining space, where Jen and Sam shared their wedding breakfast with their closest family and friends. Before everyone sat down, Sam's dad, Jamie, proudly introduced them for the very first time as Mr and Mrs - another lovely moment filled with smiles and applause.

The styling reflected everything about the day: simple, joyful and meaningful. Four centrepieces of white and yellow flowers decorated the tables, while their single-tier lemon sponge cake was finished with delicate white frosting and cheerful daisies. Daisies symbolise happiness and joy, and I honestly can't think of a flower that represented Jen and Sam's wedding more perfectly.

Should you hire a photographer for a small wedding?

There's often a misconception that because you're having a smaller wedding, you don't need a photographer. I couldn't disagree more.

In fact, intimate weddings often create some of the most emotional, meaningful photographs because every single guest is someone incredibly important. The hugs last a little longer, the conversations feel more personal, and there's more time to slow down and really experience the day. Whether you're surrounded by 14 people or 140, your wedding deserves to be remembered in a way that allows you to relive every smile, every tear and every tiny moment you might otherwise miss.

Jen and Sam's wedding was proof that you don't need a huge guest list to create an unforgettable day. You need the people you love most, a celebration that feels true to you, and the freedom to enjoy every single moment together.
